It's Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope time again!
It is hard to believe that it was more than 20 years ago when Peggy Truscott walked into my tiny office at Ovarian Cancer Canada with an exciting idea. She told me that her local ovarian cancer support group was discouraged and saddened from so many losses in the past year. She thought that maybe if they could all get together, invite friends and family, and walk together in a beautiful setting, it might build a stronger feeling of community and support for those living with the disease. she offered to organize it with her family, and as she walked out, she said, "And maybe we will even raise a bit of money too!"
These many years later, the Walk is a cornerstone of the success of this movement. The event spread quickly across the country, and since its start has raised over $26 million! Yes Peggy, your idea did raise a bit of money. But even more so, it helped create a national community of people living with, caring for and concerned about ovarian cancer. A community that put their voices together to demand change, demand increased investment in research, and demand attention to a disease which had been overlooked for too long. And things are changing - more insight into the disease, how to prevent it, more clinical trials. We cannot stop pushing yet - please support the walk if you can to ensure all Canadian women diagnosed will have the best possible chance for a good outcome.
