Last September, at the age of 43, I was shocked with a diagnosis of stage 4 Ovarian Cancer. I went from being a healthy mother and wife to dying in a matter of a few weeks. 

 
Because of a lack of gynecoogy-oncologists and a severe back log in the British Columbia Cancer Care system, I was forced to flee to the United States to get treatment and I spoke out about my situation. Shockingly, I learned that I was not the only one. Had I remained in BC, the wait time for surgery would have caused more devastation. 

As I spoke out, I learned that Ovarian Cancer Canada has been working with the province, tirelessly advocating for more gynecology-oncologists for years. Between my efforts and theirs, finally, in July of 2024, the BC government pledged to hire 7 more gynecology oncologists. 

Ovarian Cancer is the deadly gynecological cancer. There are no early detection screenings for this disease. As such, it is often not caught until stage 3 or 4. The 5 year 45% for all stages, 30% for stage 4. We must do better.  

 
So, I am walking to Support Ovarian Cancer Awareness and Ovarian Cancer Canada. I will also be sharing my story at the event in Victoria, on September 8.
