Hey Friends, Welcome!
Once again I am joining my cousin Jo's team 'Jo's Superheroes' and once again we will be walking to raise awareness about Ovarian Cancer.
I walk because 19 years ago, half a lifetime ago, I lost my Auntie Pat to cancer. I lost all the moments that we could have shared together. I went to her grave to tell her how Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ended and I'll never know if she was as dissatisfied by the epilogue as I was. This is one thing I think about my aunt because one of my last conversations I remember having with her was reading Harry Potter, and she mistakenly told me she was 200 pages ahead of where she actually was and she had to quickly catch up so she wouldn't be made a liar the next time I called her.
I walk with my cousin Jo who was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer seven years ago and who underwent surgery and chemo. Jo is a constant inspiration to me, not only because she is always positive and upbeat (and all around cool) but because she advocates so hard to raise awareness about Ovarian Cancer. I sometimes wonder if Ovarian Cancer was more understood, if doctors better understood genetics, and if screening was more widely available in Saskatchewan if my cousin's cancer would have been caught earlier. That's why I walk, so early detection becomes more common and women are able to create lasting memories with their families without fear of what tomorrow might bring.I walk because it seems that I learn of someone else who has been diagnosed with this disease and I hope that their future is better because we've learned so much more about Ovarian Cancer since my first walk.
The Walk celebrates the hope I carry with me every day – the hope for a future without this disease.
Every dollar I raise supports Ovarian Cancer Canada, the only national charity entirely dedicated to this important cause. Funds will be used to provide support, increase awareness, and fund vital research so that we can change the future for the women we love.
Thanks for your support!
