Greetings friends and family

Our team is walking today not just in memory of Sylvia and other women that have succumbed to ovarian cancer but also for those that are living with this disease.One does not have to look far to see how ovarian cancer has impacted friends and family. My neighbour recently lost his wife to ovarian cancer and my fellow team members/family friends lost their grandmother/mother to this disease. The location of this walk was also one of my moms favorite places to get away for a few minutes so I thought it fitting to enter this walk.

Even though not physically present today, my mother (Sylvia) is with us in spirit as we walk to raise awareness and funds to assist those diagnosed with ovarian cancer. My mother passed away in 2016 , six months after being diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. We watched this disease transform my mother from a vigorous, energetic woman who could spend twenty hours a day caring for my quadriplegic brother whilst maintaining a household , to one without the strength to get out of bed for more than several hours a day.

The outcomes for this disease have not improved much over the last 50 years. Too many women are diagnosed at late stages  of the disease since it is a silent killer that presents few definitive symptoms.  Research targeted at prevention, earlier diagnosis and treatment options, both curative and palliative is necessary to win the battle against ovarian cancer.
