Today, thousands of Canadian women are living with ovarian cancer. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, approximately 3,000 more women will be diagnosed and an estimated 1,950 will die from the disease this year.

Each of these women is central to a family. Every one of these women has people who love her. Just being there to support and honour her means everything. That’s why I’m rallying with the community at the Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope.

The Walk celebrates the hope I carry with me every day – the hope for a future without this disease.

Ovarian Cancer receives a disproportionately small amount of funding for awareness and research. There is no screening for ovarian cancer and many women are not diagnosed until the disease has significantly progressed.

I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Clear Cell ovarian cancer in June 2015. I had 16 weekly chemotherapy treatments, and then 25 daily radiation treatments. My treatment was completed in December, 2015.

Since then, I have been extremely fortunate. Thanks to science and a lot of luck, I have been free of cancer (fingers crossed) for over eight years.

Many women are not as fortunate as me. Research is desperately needed to develop treatments that will work. But funding for ovarian cancer lags far behind that for most other forms of cancer, and outcomes for women diagnosed with the disease have not changed significantly in more than 50 years.

Every dollar I raise supports Ovarian Cancer Canada, the only national charity entirely dedicated to this important cause. Funds will be used to provide support to women and families living with ovarian cancer, increase awareness of the disease, and fund vital research so that we can change the future for women.

Please provide your support by giving generously. Better yet, if you are up for a challenge, join me, Frank, and Luca at the Ovarian Cancer Canada Winnipeg Walk of Hope on September 8 in Kildonan Park. Together we can make a difference.
