Ovarian Cancer -- Let's Make Change Happen
Why I walk.
I am now 1.5 years with no evidence of disease, a significant milestone and one that I celebrate daily, but far too many of us with this disease won’t ever get to hear those words.
This year alone, over 3,100 Canadians will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer, 75% of whom will be at a late stage. Every day 5 individuals in our country will die from this disease; every day five mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, neighbours will die from ovarian cancer. Add to that, the long-term survival outcomes have not changed in over 50 years, and 56% of women diagnosed won’t live beyond 5 years.
That is why I got involved with Ovarian Cancer Canada’s Patient Partner in Research program, to influence not only my future but the future of thousands of others who have been impacted by this disease. Through this program, I’ve seen firsthand how the monies raised through the Walk of Hope supports the vital research that will save lives. I’ve even had the privilege of meeting some of the researchers who are working tirelessly to find methods for early detection, more humane treatments, and, dare I say it, develop a cure.
We can not be silent about ovarian cancer any more. It has stolen too many lives and been ignored for far too long.
We need to do better and you can help by either supporting me through a small donation right now or walking by my side on Sept 8 as I, and thousands of others, complete Ovarian Cancer Canada’s Walk of Hope.
Together we can make change happen.
